Tasting 10/28/16

Glenmorangie Duthac nas 43% Northern Highlands

Nose: Seductive aromas of pear, toffee apple, Brazil nuts in toffee, with an underlying spicy note, some toasty oak. With a splash of water, some creamy vanilla fudge is encountered, along with the classic Sherry cask note of linseed oil.

Palate: Mouth-filling flavors of milk chocolate, toffee, Brazil nuts, leather and some aniseed. The spiciness is definite, but gentle, with hints of ginger and clove.

Finish: The aftertaste once again reminds drinkers that this is a Glenmorangie, with vanilla, apricots in cream and some almond marzipan.

Allt-a-Bhainne 1993 Port Finish 22yr 46% Speyside

Nose: Red berries, cut grass, grape stem and underlying cereal notes.

Palate: Slightly vegetal, though stewed fruits and nutty cake keep it rather sweet.

Finish: Very long and well spiced with old oak.

Deanston Oloroso Cask 20yr 55.3% Southern Highlands

Nose: Sultana, raisin, rum cake dotted with cherries, and a hint of festive spices.

Palate: Chocolate peanuts, Mocha, candied ginger, sugared orange peels. Raisins continue to develop on the mid-palate.

Finish: Warming and long.

Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 3 nas 52.2% Speyside

Nose: Rich complexity with elegant oaky notes and dried fruits balanced by mellow cinnamon spices and ginger.

Palate: Luxurious with many layers of vanilla oak, rich woody spices, dark fruits, and a definite sherry character interspersed with elegant honey.

Finish: Blissful!

Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2015 16yr 43% Islay

Nose: Intense peat, vanilla, and roasted grain

Palate: Very full-bodied and thick with a sweet smokiness that comes in waves with a hint of dried grasses sea salt

Finish: Long, longer, longest … with smoke and dried fruit

Kilchoman Madiera Cask 2015 4yr 50% Islay

Nose: Initial thick Kilchoman peat smoke, slightly sweet and nutty, damp suede leather, fruity peaches with banana, pear and pineapple, zesty orange marmalade

Palate: Medium-full bodied and a little chewy, rich malty cereal barley and white pepper, mouthfilling, savoury, suede leather and tannic oak wood, treacle and molasses, like an overlarge bite of chocolate fudge cake, drying walnut and a ginger spiciness.

Finish: Long, tannic and drying, fluffy with zingy citrus and strong fresh earthen peat, burnt sugars and charred bbq meats.

Brew List

It’s a smoky, coffee, rye & pumpkin brewfest...with a little Hofbräu for an opener...

Fit for a King, a little port, a tun of sherry, a lot of smoke, and a little farm....

Tastings

Hofbräu Original
