October 23, 2015 Tasting

Springbank 21 46% Campbeltown


Nose: Very complex nose with orange rind, vanilla, stewed fruits, honey, and a bit drying/leathery.


Palate: Well balanced with stewed fruits on the fore, raisins, and then a hit of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla followed by some oaky dryness and honey.


Finish: Long with dried fruit sweetness and light spice on the tail.


Comment: Springbank continues to release great ones.





Rosebank 1990 24yr 46% Lowland


Nose: Light and herbal with notes of vanilla and marzipan


Palate: Nice fall fruit sweetness with orange peel (almost pithy) and almonds with slight chocolate notes


Finish: Medium finish with continued orange peel and light spice.


Comment: Perfect summertime dram!








Ardbeg Perpetuum nas 47.4% Islay


Nose: Fresh peat, vanilla, grapefruit peels, light milk chocolate


Palate: Smoked peat, dark chocolate, grapefruit zest, bit creamy


Finish: Long & warming, smoldering peat embers, bit drying & nutty with lingering peat



Comment: Quite complex and could probably list many more descriptives in each category. One not to miss.





Talisker 2012 30yr 45.8% Skye


Nose: Gentle smoke with some light peat followed by salted caramel, candied apples, and citrus notes.


Palate: Slightly sweet with fried figs, fig cookies, biscuits, and a bit peppery


Finish: Long with gentle smoke, lingering spice, and some salinity.


Comment: Very well balanced.








Laphroaig Cairdeas 200th Anniversary Edition nas 51.5% Islay


Nose: Sweet peat with citrus and honey, slight salinity with vanilla. Give it a covered swirl and slight smoke and a little flowery note comes through.


Palate: Sweet and herbal with a buttery consistency followed by light peat and spicy notes.


Finish: Medium long with continued light sweetness and lingering peat and saltiness.


Comment: Not my favorite of the Cairdeas but worth a try.







Glenglassaugh Cask 6801 40yr 52.1% Speyside


Nose: Full on sherry bomb with rich stewed fruits, dates, fresh cut oranges, and licorice.


Palate: Fresh roasted nuts, rich dark chocolate, chocolate covered oranges, molasses


Finish: Very long and warming with some oak tannins, nice spice with some late citrus notes.


Comment: Wow! A truly stunning malt.

Tastings

Innis & Gunn "White Oak Wheat Beer" 6.4% Scotland


Nose: Bice golden color with soft citrus and slight maltiness, bit floral.


Palate: Orange and malty caramel, not hoppy but some late spice.


Finish: Short and refreshing.









Troegs "Master of Pumpkins" 7.5% PA


Nose: Crisp and refreshing with notes of pumkin and malt with some light pumpkin pie spice


Palate: Vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg with some late ginger and honey.


Finish: Smooth and dessert like


Comment: Well balanced and deep in flavor.










Neshaminy Creek "Punkless Dunkel" 8.8% PA


Nose: Dark, nutty, and full of spice & pumpkin


Palate: Clove, banana, nutmeg, and cinnamon with sweet malt notes


Finish: “Stick to your ribs” and meaty.












Founders "Dark Penance" Imperial Black IPA 8.9% MI


Nose: Bitter malts and hoppy


Palate: Hops, coffee, roasted malt, and bitter


Finish: Chewy and sharp











Avery “Rumpkin” Rum Barrel Aged Pumpkin Ale

18% abv


Nose: Clear copper color with little head. Pumpkin, nutmeg, light cinnamon, and rum.


Palate: Rum, caramel malt, pumpkin pie spices and ginger. Very sweet.


Finish: With the high abv it’s like actually chewing a piece of pumpkin pie.

Beer flights midway through the evening. I was able to find some Avery Rumpkin @18% and subbed it for the Troegs Master Pumpkin that we actually had as an opener while waiting for all the guests to arrive.
