5/23/14 Tasting

Glenmorangie Companta nas 46% abv

Highlands

Nose: Very fruity, spice, chocolate, earthy, then ripe red grape, toasted almond.

Palate: I had to check the abv as this is much bigger then expected. Hit of spice, chewy, then sorbet, ginger, stewed fruit, molasses, chocolate notes on the tail.

Finish: Nice long finish with a little sweetness, clove, earthy again and a nice lingering oily mouthfeel.

Comment: Glenmorangie nailed this one when it comes to wine finishes. Very complex and surprising in many ways. One not to miss.

Kilchoman 2007 Vintage 6 yr 46% abv

Islay

Nose: Buttered pancakes, showing nice mellowed peat & smoke, slightly sweet notes again with that nice farmyard note

Palate: Creamy, now pancakes with syrup, light peat, with some nice late smoke & freshly paved parking lot.

Finish: Nicely sweet with lingering peat, light spice, and soft smoldering fire

Comment: Having followed Kilchoman from the start, and tasting over 20 previous bottling’s, this one is very well balanced. Kudos!

Talisker Dark Storm nas 45.8% abc

Skye

Nose: Initial sweetness with light peat and a bit of smoke, and a bit of orange rind

Palate: Light spice then a hit of smoke, sherry, orange again with some late spice

Finish: Long and peppery, very drying

Comments: Overall very robust over the “storm”. Wish it was more readily available

Yamazaki Sherry Cask nas 48% abv

Japan

Nose: Fruity and sweet, rich, with plum & date notes, dark roast coffee beans, sherry, and spice

Palate: Nice balance of cocoa, prunes, plums, sherry, and chocolate with a continuing sweetness.

Finish: Long, slightly spiced, with cocoa, toffee, plums, and dates again. Fabtastic!

Comment: A wonderfully complex whiskey.

Highland Park Freya 15yr 51.2% abv

Orkney

Nose: Citrus, woodsy, leather, pine, fruity smoke, heather, summer fruit

Palate: Oaky, ripe pear, light smoke, orange rind, slightly sweet on the tail

Finish: Long and rich, drying, with dried apricot and spice

Comment: At the tasting it was 5th in and wasn’t my favorite. But after re-visiting on a clan palate, WOW! I’m a fan. Very different from the mainstream HP, but wonderfully complex and enjoyable.

Oban 21yr 58.5% abv

Western Highlands

Nose: Lovely sherry, honey, salt air, spice, warm toffee, stewed prunes, and soft caramel

Palate: Big spicy ht, then quickly moves to toffee, dried apricots, juicy sweet/tart apples

Finish: Long and drying, very creamy, with a late malty hit and lingering spice.

Comment: Superb!

Big crowd for this tasting, all with one thing on their mind, consuming all the “food on a stick”, and not a morsel was left as we stuffed ourselves with the food and some great whiskies (and a few brews)! A great time!
