Our 30th Tasting

February 22nd

Talisker 2010 30yr 57.3% abv

Skye


In celebration of our 30th tasting we opened this beautiful Talisker


Nose: Opens with some sweet apple and dried fruit notes,  right into a smoldering peat fire followed by wonderful spice and oak. Slight notes of chocolate and vanilla


Palate: Dried fruit again with a slight berry sweetness, oak and smoke


Finish: Long with the roasted malt coming through nicely, bit peppery followed by fantastic lingering smoke


Comment: Wow!





Bowmore Surf nas 40% abv

Islay


Nose: Opens with some nice light fruit notes, peat smoke, and briny sea air.


Palate: Nice oak up front, sweet apple, with a pleasant smoke undertone


Finish: Medium long, warming, with oak and caramel on the tail













Arran Machrie Moor (peatd) nas 46% abv

Islands


Nose: Sweet malt, vanilla, chocolate, with lingering citrus notes


Palate: Sweet again upfront, slightly drying into bitter chocolate with an underlying slight peat note


Finish: Medium long with some nice spice and light peat










Dalwhinnie Special Release 25yr 52.1% abv

Highlands


Nose:  Sweet mango and honeydew, vanilla pudding, toffee and honey, spice and oak


Palate: Chewy oak, something to sink your teeth into. Vanilla, honey, and spice notes again


Finish: Medium long and warming with oaky spiciness


Comment: Very nice and complex. Should also try with water







Old Pultney WK499 nas 52% abv

Highlands


Nose: Fresh and crisp with vanilla & fall fruit leading into vanilla and some slight saltiness


Palate: Dry with citrus and salt, malty sweetness and vanilla with some late peat


Finish: Again dry with the lemon and saltiness filling the medium long finish










Aberlour Warehouse No.1 Sherry Cask #4934 Bottle 132 16yr 57% abv

Speyside



Nose: Nutty pecan with maple, oak, and pear


Palate: A sherry and oak feast with spicy overtones


Finish: Long and peppery, oaky and drying











Octomore Edition 4.2 Comus 167ppm               5 yr 61% abv

Islay



Nose: Beautiful peat smoke, leather, tobacco and a bit briny. Pear syrup, grapes, and cantaloupe


Palate: Smoke leads in with quickly evolving  sauterne and peat


Finish: Long and warming, smokey and peaty


Comment: Best of the 5 year Octomore to date

Alaskan Smoked Porter 6.5% abv

Juneau, Alaska


Nose: Smoldering fire, adhesive bandage


Palate: Big smoke with some late maltiness


Finish: Short


Comment: Liquid smoke? You bet, and still easy to drink.









Goose Island “Bourbon County” Stout 15% abv

Chicago, Illinois


Nose: Vanilla, caramel, oak, and smoke


Palate: Very sweet, barleywine’ish with a nice molasses note


Finish: Short & sweet with some lip smacking bourbon










The Bruery “Smoking Wood” Smoked Imperial Rye Porter Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels 13% abv

Orange County, California


Nose: Very sweet, creme brûlée


Palate: Nice malt, rye coming trough, and some late smoke with some dryness


Finish: Short









Fremont 2012 “Bourbon Barrel Abominable Ale” Winter Warmer 9% abv

Seattle, Washington


Nose: Liquid chocolate cake, caramel, little spice


Palate: Bourbon barrel comes through nicely with some vanilla and roasted malt


Finish: Short with some hop notes
